368: GENTLEWOMAN’S SHAFT, MATLOCK

Saturday 10 May 2014
A party of four cavers descended Gentlewoman’s Shaft intended to do a through trip to exit via Youds Level in Matlock Bath. They were unable to find the correct route and returned to the shaft. Unfortunately they did not have the right kit with them to climb back to the surface and so they were marooned. A DCRO team of 25 attended when the party were reported overdue. Initially it was considered safest to guide the party to exit via Youds Level as they had originally intended but some of the escorted cavers encountered difficulties on the climbs and so a return was made to Gentlewoman’s shaft. Here, after some time was spent clearing vegetation and safely rigging the shaft, the marooned cavers were hauled out to the surface.
